Soprannominata La Ghriba (“la strana” in arabo), la sinagoga di Djerba si trova 11 km a sud di Houmt-Souk, la capitale dell'isola. Si tratta di un'attrazione turistica imperdibile a Djerba, anche se sfortunatamente i turisti che soggiornano negli hotel club difficilmente sospettano della sua esistenza. C'è da dire che è isolato in aperta campagna, lontano dalle spiagge, al centro dell'isola, a 1 chilometro dal villaggio di Erriadh, una delle due cittadine ebraiche di Djerba. Notevole l'interno decorato con legno dipinto, mosaici e vetrate colorate. Devi toglierti le scarpe e indossare uno yarmulke. Sarebbe la sinagoga più antica del mondo, risalente al 586 a.C.! Fu fondata dai sacerdoti del tempio di Salomone dopo la sua distruzione da parte di Nabucodonosor nello stesso anno. Si dice che i resti del Tempio siano ancora visibili in alcuni punti, ma non esiste prova della loro veridicità. È stato danneggiato da un attacco islamista nel 2002. Lì vediamo rabbini che leggono brani della Torah. Un luogo ricco di storia e pieno di emozioni, che testimonia anche la tolleranza dei tunisini. La sinagoga La Ghriba è oggetto di un pellegrinaggio annuale, in occasione della festa ebraica di Lag Ba'omer (33° giorno della Pasqua ebraica) che riunisce ogni anno diverse migliaia di pellegrini.

3 settimane faVery old and authentic synagogue located in the heart of Djerba island. Very interesting place. Be vary that google maps do not work well in the island and thus you may end up at someone's property instead, just as I ended up. Look for a police control point and that is the indicator you are at the right place.

7 mesi faI had pretty high expectations as it was regarded as one of the highlights of Djerba Island. There is no doubt that it is beautifully crafted inside and it has a very long history and remains highly significant for Jewish people in Tunisia today and is the most famous Jewish site for the local community. It is where local Tunisian Jews celebrate the holiday of Lag BaOmer.

una settimana faI really enjoyed my visit to El Ghriba Synagogue. The place is well-maintained and clean, with a peaceful and respectful atmosphere. The people there were friendly and welcoming, which made the experience even better. Definitely worth a stop if you’re in Djerba!

un anno faBeautiful place, guarded by security. Must buy a ticket in the front office across the street, go thru a scanner, then across the street. Good parking area. Unique synagogue 🕍 filled with tiles, stained glass, and mosaic architecture.
